HAYDON HALL

Haydon HallHaydon Hall was originally constructed for the new Murrurundi branch of the Commercial Bank of Sydney in 1937 with the Bank Managers Residence incorporated into the building.

It later became the NAB Bank and operated until its closure in 1997. A Georgian exterior with Art Deco features of the period the building is of solid brick construction.

Haydon Hall is named after Thomas Haydon a colourful character who was the original land owner of the area. In 1840 he established on the east side of the Pages River the village of Haydonton to support the new town of Murrurundi on the western side.

Thomas Haydon built the first Roman Catholic church along with the Murrurundi Race Track. The village of Haydonton later merged with Murrurundi in 1913.

The ‘Hall’ is an oblique reference to the notorious Murrurundi character, the bush ranger Ben Hall who spent his early childhood with his parents opposite Haydon Hall. The proportions of the original Banking Chamber also recalls visions of a manor hall.
